The elevators dinged, and the doors opened to a frenzy of activity in the hallway. The rooms and offices we rented out were normally quiet, but now they were teeming with agents and liaisons running this way and that. The desk in the hall was empty once again, and I laughed to myself, wondering why they’d given Anna a desk when she was always out doing something for someone else.

Ben met us a few steps off the elevator. “We’re in the conference room,” he told us. “I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but it doesn’t look good.”

When we entered the room, the entire place was lined wall-to-wall with people, most of whom I’d never seen before. Jackson and Renna were already seated at the table, and Renna motioned to the three seats beside her that she had saved for us.

Just after we sat down, I noticed the extreme amount of catered snack food that had been placed on the table in front of us. Simmons entered the room, and people started to quiet down.

I leaned over to Renna. “Do they normally cater emergency meetings?” I asked.

There will be some widespread news tomorrow morning, and while that’s not unusual in itself, there is a secondary situation that we need to address. To give you the nitty-gritty on the topic, I’ve brought in our media liaison, Ruby Tilar. Ruby has been working in conjunction with the agency for three years now and keeps close tabs on how the news affects our cases.”

Simmons turned and gave the tall redhead standing next to him a nod. I looked Ruby up and down a couple of times. It was clear her hair had been dyed, but whoever had done it did a fantastic job. I wondered if she was naturally a shade of red or if she had done it to build a persona around her name. She was very slender and, although tall, extremely curvy as well. She wore simple, well-cut gray slacks and a white button-up shirt with the sleeves partially rolled up her forearms. One of her most striking features, however, was her solid, dark chocolate-colored eyes, framed by black, perfectly mascara-enhanced eyelashes a girl could only dream of. Her skin was pale, like most natural redheads would have been, and she had dark red lipstick painted on her lips. I remembered how I used to be jealous of
